August 11 is the date of birth of the famous Haïtian singer/songwriter Cornelia Schütt, AKA Ti-Corn. She was born in Germany and was brought to Haïti while she was a baby. According to her story, it seems that Ti-Corn at a very young age, developed a passion for music due to her environment, which channeled her toward the songs and dances of Haïti.
Cap Haitian is the place of Ti Corn’s childhood as well as most of her adult life. It’s no wonder that this septentrional metropolis is always proud of her charming daughter who devoted her musical talent to sing and dance Haïti’s natural beauty, and its cultural/folkloric richness.
Cornelia Schütt is the offspring of a German family established in the Northern region of the Island, which was once, one of the richest zone of the nation.
Her grand-parents stepped foot in the Island nation a few decade after its independence in 1804.
Fluently ease in speaking several languages, Ti corn is a virtuoso in singing juicy creole compositions as well as other songs. Cap Haïtian is the second largest town located in the Northern part of Haiti.
The story of Mrs. Cornelia Schütt-Richard is so fascinating that I felt compelled to quote her own words, taking from her Biography.
“Whenever, in the course of my life, I introduced myself as a Haitian singer-songwriter, I met at
first with incredulous looks. The colour of my skin did not fit the image of a singer from the
Caribbean island of Haiti. But to convince, I just needed to grab my guitar and sing some Creole
songs, and this is exactly what I have loved to do all my life, at all kinds of occasions and in many
different countries,” wrote Ti-Corn.
